What is a Digital Product Passport?
A Digital Product Passport is a structured digital record linked to a physical product. Under ESPR, product-specific rules determine the information required, the data carrier, who can access or update data, and whether the passport applies at model, batch or item level.
Why does this matter for textiles?
Textile supply chains involve multiple manufacturers, brands, facilities and product variants. The EU’s 2025–2030 working plan prioritizes textiles/apparel for ESPR measures, with 2027 indicated in the plan for the product group.
For businesses, the practical implication is straightforward: product information needs to become more structured and easier to exchange across the supply chain.
What should companies prepare now?
- Product identity and SKU structures
- Materials and composition information
- Manufacturer and operator records
- Supporting documentation and product records
- Clear responsibility for who supplies, verifies and updates data
Do not hard-code speculative future textile fields into your operating model as if they are already final.
